Mataranka
Northern Territory, Australia
Mataranka is famous for its thermal pools, situated on the upper reaches of the Roper River, about one hour south of Katherine. This area was made famous from the Jeannie Gunn novel "We of the Never Never", which was written in 1908 and set at Elsey Station. Population is about 250.
Places to see and things to do
- Enjoy a stay at the Mataranka Homestead, situated just by the Mataranka Thermal Pools. At lunchtimes, there is a daily showing of the movie "We of the Never Never". There is live entertainment often in the evenings.
- Laze in the thermal pool, which is at a constant 34 degrees.
- from the thermal pool, there are a couple of walks along the river - to Stevies Hole, the Junction or teh Botanical Walk Loop
- Bitter Springs (Koran), 2 kms away, is another thermal pool in a more natural bush setting.
- go fishing, or if you are not in luck, go and watch the Barramundi Feeding at the Territory Manor where a guy pulls one out of the water with his hands.
- take a bush walk to Mataranka Falls.
- stroll through the Elsey Homestead Replica, which was built for the film 'We of the Never Never'.
- in town, visit the giant talking termite mound (though it did not say anything when we visited), the Stockyard Gallery and the Never Never Museum.
