Box Jellyfish
In the north of Australia, Box Jellyfish occur in the water, commonly between October and May, but they are also a danger at other times of the year. Between October and May, in waters in which they are present, do not enter the water. Between June and September, the jelly fish are less common but serious stings have occurred during this period. Be cautious if swimming, especially children, and preferable wear protective clothing.
Symptoms:
- immediate and increasing pain
- whitish strings adhering to skin
- red and purple weals appearing on the skin
Treatment:
- retrieve victim from the water
- monitor airway, breathing and circulation
- perform resuscitation if necessary
- flood stings with vinegar for at least 30 seconds
- use ice packs for pain
- keep victim calm and still
- call emergency assistance for an ambulance or transport to hospital.
