[ back to Japan Guide ]

Japan is notoriously known to be an expensive place to travel, and if you stay in nice hotels and eat at fancy restaurant, it will be expensive (as it would be anywhere in the world). Our family travelled to Japan from Australia in 2011 and although it was not a cheap holiday it was affordable for us. Here is a breakdown of our costs so that you can get an idea of what the costs may be for you.

We travelled for two weeks (13 nights) and bought a 14 day rail pass and stayed in hostel type accommodation, with all of us sharing a Japanese style room. Prices are in Australian dollars (which at the time the exchange was close to US Dollars)

Including all costs (except flights there), the average daily budget costs for our family was $330.
