Guide to Wynyard in Tasmania

Located 16 km west of Burnie and 171 km north-west of Launceston.

An attractive and interesting rural service centre - the rural area around Wynyard is very English characterised by rolling hills and a patchwork quilt of fields.

Table Cape: an beautiful headland with views back to Wynyard. There are amazing views up and down the coast from the lookout perched above the ocean.
Table Cape Lighthouse:This light station, established in 1888, is part of a network of navigational aids.
Fossil Bluff: Located just west of Wynyard, this bluff offers excellent views, and is also the location where the oldest Australian fossil of a marsupial (a giant marsupial) was discovered. At thebase of the hill there is a small beach, with rocks at either end characterised by shells which have been caught in the rock and fossilised.

Wynyard is unofficially called 'Tulip Town' due to the large amount of tulips grown in the surrponding area.
Wynyard is located at the mouth of the Inglis River.
Table Cape was originally named by Bass and Flinders who sailed along the coast in 1798. It is actually a volcanic plug which rises to about 190 metres above sea level.
