Where:
Organ Pipes National Park
Melbourne, Australia
20 km from north-west of Melbourne, just off the calder freeway
Last Visited:
September 2006
Why Go:
This is a hidden and not well known National Park within Melbourne suburbia
Highlights:
- Walking: there are well maintained tracks linking each of the sites. Coming back up to the parking area may be a hard walk for some
- Organ Pipes: the main attraction, columns of rock exposed by the river
- Tessellated Pavement: the tops of columns worn down by the creek over time
- Rosette Rock: an interesting radial display of columns like the spokes of a wheel
Lowlights:
- no bbqs
Eating & Drinking:
- There is nowhere to purchase food or drink at the National Park
- There are no BBQs, though you are able to bring along your own and use in the designated picnic area.
Other things you should know about:
- The Organ Pipes rock formation is an old creek line that was filled with larva 1 million years ago. As the molten lava slowly cooled and turned into basalt, it cracked and formed into long columns.
- Parking is free, as is entry to the park.
- The park is only open during daylight hours.
