Why Go:
This small seaside town is great for day trip from Melbourne for a nice lunch and walk along the coast or a dip in the ocean.
Highlights:
- walking: stroll around town, look at the galleries or hike along the cliff top beach track. At low tide you can stroll around the rock pools that are exposed beow the bluff.
- beach: there is a surf beach which has occasional good surfing waves, and is also good for swiming. For a safer swimming spot, there is the shallow waters of the Barwon River
- fishing: there are several popular spots for fishing in the Barwon, including off the timber bridge.
Eating & Drinking:
- There are a few upmarket and lower market cafes to chose from for lunch
- as with all seaside towns, there is the ubitquitous bakery
- As with all seaside towns, there are a few options for fish-and-chips, which you can take down to the riverside or the beach to eat.
Other things you should know about:
- barwon Heads was featured on the Australian TV show SeaChange (called Pearl Bay).
- The timber bridge was built in 1927 (was blown up in SeaChange, but is still there!)
- barwon Heads was surveyed in 1870, and developed as a fishing town.
- The acchor from the immigrant ship 'Earl of Charlemont' is located in the foreshore park opposite the Barwon Heads Hotel.
